Sprints

Set a project room to Sprints and the work runs in cycles. Unplanned work waits in the Backlog, a sprint starts with fixed dates, cards move through the room's statuses, and when a sprint ends its open tasks carry into the next one. Sprints open on the Boards hub Cadence view and plan in story points.

Room Owners and Editors create, start and complete sprints and change their rules. Everyone in the room works the tasks.

How sprints behave by default

RuleSprint default
Unfinished work when it endsMove it on — carried to the next sprint
Complete when its last task is doneOn
Adding work after it startsWarn
Freeze tasks when completedOn

The same rules engine runs Milestones and Boards. Only the defaults and the words change, so a room can switch between them and keep every task.

How to create a sprint

  1. Open the project room and select Sprints in the dock.
  2. Select New sprint.
  3. Enter the sprint name (for example, Sprint 12).
  4. Choose the sprint duration — Daily, 2 Days, 1 Week, 2 Weeks, 4 Weeks, Current Month, Next Month or Custom — and set the Start date and Start time.
  5. Optionally, under Automation, turn on Don't start before the start date, choose a sprint under Start after another sprint, turn on Complete automatically at end time, or have the next sprint created automatically with the same duration.
  6. Select Create sprint.

To add work, drag cards in from the Backlog, or choose Move to sprint in a task's options. Give each task Story points from its options so the burndown and velocity read in points.

tip

The AI project manager can draft the sprint from your planning meeting. When the minutes plan new work, it proposes a sprint with its name, dates and tasks on a card you edit before you select Create sprint.

Work the sprint board

  1. In the Boards hub, select a sprint and select Open to go to its kanban board.
  2. Select Show backlog to open the backlog beside the board, and drag tasks into the sprint.
  3. Drag cards between columns. The columns are the room's task statuses; select the column header to edit statuses.
  4. Use All users and All meetings to show one person's cards or only the tasks from one meeting.
  5. Select Analytics to open the sprint dashboard with the burndown and velocity. See Boards hub.

How to complete a sprint

  1. Open the sprint's options (⋯) and select Complete sprint.
  2. Review the counts: completed items are archived and open items are moved.
  3. Under Move open items to, choose the next sprint, another open sprint, or Backlog.
  4. To create the next sprint on the spot, turn on Create the next sprint. It is made with the same duration and open items move straight into it. Type its name, or select AI Suggest to have one proposed.
  5. Select Complete sprint.

If the sprint still has days to run, you are asked Complete this sprint early? before it closes. A completed sprint is locked as a record; choose Reopen sprint from its options to work in it again.

Rules for a sprint

  1. Open the sprint's options (⋯) and select Sprint configuration.
  2. Set the rules. The panel shows on the right what the sprint can and cannot do right now.
  • Tasks in progress at once — a WIP cap. Starting one more asks you to finish something first.
  • Needs sign-off from — named people who must approve before the sprint can be completed.
  • Order — make this sprint wait on another (start after, start with or finish after), as a blocking (Must) or advisory (Should) link.
  • Cadence — shows whether Create the next one on close is on. You set it when you complete the sprint.
  • Finishing and Scope — unfinished work (Move it on, Ask, Refuse) and where it goes (The next one or The backlog), auto-complete, freezing, and the rules for adding work after it starts.

For room-wide starting rules, open Room settings › Sprints › Sprint defaults.

Other sprint options

From a sprint's options (⋯) you can also Change timeline, Edit sprint name, Move pending tasks, Merge into another sprint, Sync sprint with another room, Lock editing, and Import from Jira, Export to Jira or Sync with Jira where your company allows Jira. See Jira.

note

Where your company has TimeTrack on, sprints read in points against capacity. See Project TimeTrack.
